Charles Manning Hope Clark

Sydney-born Australian historian Charles Manning Hope Clark (1915 – 1991), author of the six-volume A History of Australia, published between 1962 and 1987, is arguably Australia's most famous historian, although his work has also been widely criticised.

Clark won scholarships to Melbourne Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, attended Balliol College, Oxford, and taught history at schools in England and Australia before being appointed as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne and, from 1949, as Professor of History at the Canberra University College and later the Australian National University.
