Mapoon
Located in Tjungundji Country on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula near Trathalarrakwana (Tjungundji: ‘Barramundi story place’ a.k.a Cullen Point) at the entrance to Port Musgrave, 68 kilometres north of Weipa, Mapoon Mission was established in November 1891 as one of a chain of locations for the 'protection' of Aborigines. Initially known as the Batavia River Mission and operated by Moravian missionaries and the Presbyterian Church of Australia, on land reserved by the Queensland Government, the mission subsequently became known as Mapoon/Marpuna (Tjungundji: ‘place where people fight on the sand-hills’).
