Djabugay language group
The Djabugay language group is spoken in the region around Cairns, the Kuranda Range and the Barron River catchment. Its name derives from the principal dialect, which serves as both a language and dialect name.
Intermarriage with the Yidinji language group means the Djabugay dialects share elements like vocabulary, pronoun roots, nominal and verbal suffixes with their southern neighbours. Interaction with the Kuku Yalanji to the north was less frequent, resulting in less overlap in that direction.
