Located at the head of Port Phillip Bay on its northern and eastern shores, Victoria's capital and most populous city — Australia's second most-populous — takes its name from William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who was the British Prime Minister of the United Kingdom when it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837.
