Thursday Island
Situated in the Torres Strait on Kaurareg country within the Shire of Torres 36 kilometres west-northwest of Cape York and just over 800 kilometres north-northwest of Cairns, Thursday Island (colloquially, TI, Kaurareg: Waiben or Waibene), formerly known as Port Kennedy, became Torres Strait's administrative centre after the British and Queensland governments decided to relocate the settlement at Somerset at the tip of Cape York to a more convenient location.
