Winton Shire
The Shire of Winton, located on Yirandali, Guwa and Maiawali country in central western Queensland, covers an area of 53,814 square kilometres and has existed as a local government entity since it was created on 23 September 1886 under the Divisional Boards Act 1879. Its administrative centre takes its name from Winton in Dorset, the birthplace of Robert Allen, the area's first European settler.
Winton Division became the Shire of Winton on 31 March 1903 and lost an area in its northwest to the Shire of McKinlay in 1930.
