Mackay Region

Established in 2008 in Yuwibara country, the Mackay Region amalgamated the City of Mackay with the Mirani and Sarina Shires.
Mackay Municipality was proclaimed on 22 September 1869. It became a Town in March 1903 and was proclaimed a City in August 1918.

The Pioneer Division was one of Queensland's seventy-four divisions created under the Divisional Boards Act 1879 and was redesignated as a Shire at the end of March 1903. Over the next decade, two areas split away from it to form the Shires of Sarina (1 January 1912) and Mirani (4 September 1913).

After an Electoral and Administrative Review Commission report in 1991 recommended rationalising local government boundaries in the Mackay area, Mackay City amalgamated with the Pioneer Shire to form a larger city at the end of March 1994, with a northern boundary at the O'Connell River south of Proserpine.

In July 2007, the Local Government Reform Commission recommended amalgamating the three areas of Mackay, Mirani and Sarina. The City and Shires formally ceased to exist on 15 March 2008.

The Mackay Region includes the following localities:
