Halifax

Located fifteen kilometres northeast of Ingham and around one hundred and seventeen kilometres northwest of Townsville on Nyawigi country within the Shire of Hinchinbrook, takes its name from Halifax Bay, named by James Cook in June 1770 after George Montagu Dunk, the Earl of Halifax (1716-71).

After the district was opened for selection following George Dalrymple's 1864 expedition, blacksmith August Anderssen bought the parcel of land on the Herbert River's east bank. In 1881, the parcel became a rudimentary settlement with a hotel and store. The township was surveyed in 1885 and officially named the following year. The town prospered as a river port through the 1880s until a sugar tram line from Ingham to the deepwater port at Lucinda saw Inghan become the service hub for the region.
