Prussian naturalist and explorer Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (1813 – c. 1848) is known for his exploration of northern and central Australia on an overland journey from the Darling Downs to Port Essington (1844-45), and his disappearance while attempting to cross the continent from east to west in 1848.
