What Mob Is That?

Gabalbara

The AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia places the Gabalbara people (alternatively, Gabalbura, Gabelbara, Gabulbara, Kabalbara, Kabelbara, Kaiabara, Yettimaralla) in central Queensland, west-northwest of Rockhampton, with the Barna to their north, the Baradha to the northeast, the Darumbal to the east, the Gangulu to the south and the Gayiri and Wangan to the west. According to Gavan Breen, the name originates from gabul [carpet snake] and translates as "carpet snake people".

Although little recorded information exists about them, Norman Tindale's Aboriginal Tribes of Australia labels them the Kabalbara and assigns them 6,700 square kilometres west of the Mackenzie and Isaac rivers, extending west to Peak Range with their northern limits close to Cotherstone.

They have no connection to the Gabulbarra Reference Group, which lodged native title claims over parts of Magnetic Island in 1998 while acting for Townsville's Wulgurukaba people and Palm Island's Manbarra.
