Ajabatha/Ajabathan


A subgroup of the Bakanh who are listed in the AIATSIS databases as Ayapathu. Norman Tindale's Aboriginal Tribes of Australia refers to them as the Ajabatha (alternatively, Ajabathan) and assigned them 4,900 square kilometres on the western side of the Great Dividing Range extending from north of Ebagoola as far south as Musgrave, west to the headwaters of the Coleman and Holroyd Rivers and east to Violet Vale.

Tindale's listing for the group offers numerous alternatives: Aiabadu, Aiyaboto, Jabuda, Koka Ai-ebadu, Ai ebadu (with glottal stop), Koko Aiebadu, Kikahiabilo.
