Kaurareg
The traditional owners of Thursday Island (Waiben), Prince of Wales Island (Muralag) and other islands in the lower western Torres Strait, the Kaurareg (alternatively Kauraraiga, plural Kauraraigalai, Kauraregale) are part of the Muralag group, speaking a dialect of Kalaw Lagaw Ya, which falls within the Pama–Nyungan linguistic family.
Like neighbouring Islander groups, they used outrigger canoes to trade and fish in the Torres Strait. They regularly visited the Australian mainland of Cape York Peninsula, where they maintained ceremonial, marriage and trading alliances with several Aboriginal groups.
