Umpila (dialect cluster)
Umpila (a.k.a. Ompeila, Ompela, Oom-billa, or Koko-umpilo) is a dialect cluster spoken by about a handful of people, many of them elderly, on Cape York Peninsula's northeastern coast between the northern end of Temple Bay to Massey Creek at the top of Princess Charlotte Bay, and west of the Great Dividing Range towards Coen. Most of the remaining speakers live in Lockhart River, roughly on the boundary between Umpila and Kuuku Ya'u lands.
The six varieties of Umpila, variously considered dialects or distinct languages, are:
- Umpila
- Kanju (a.k.a. Kandju, Kaantyu, Gandju, Gandanju, Kamdhue, Kandyu, Kanyu, Karnu, Jabuda, Neogulada, Yaldiye-Ho)
- Kuuku-Yaʼu (a.k.a. Yaʼo, Koko-Jaʼo, Kokoyao, Bagadji, Pakadji)
- Kuuku Yani (extinct)
- Uutaalnganu (extinct)
- Kuuku Iʼyu (extinct)
