Kurtjar

By Norman Tindale's reckoning, the Kurtjar (a.k.a. Kunggara, Kuritjara, Gilbert River tribe, Gunggara, Koonkurri, Kuri'tjari, Kutjar and Ungorri) Loccupied around 4,900 square kilometres of territory in the southern Cape York Peninsula centred on the Staaten River, extending south to the Smithburne River and Delta Downs, extending inland to around Stirling and Lotus Vale.

They spoke Gurdjar, an extinct Paman language with two dialects: Gurdjar proper (a.k.a. Gunggara or Kunggara) and Rip (a.k.a. Ngarap, Areba). Gavan Breen's salvage study of the language drew on information obtained during an interview with one of the last speakers.
