Charters Towers Road

In 20th—and 21st-century usage, Charters Towers Road refers to a section of the Townsville Connection Road between the Rising Sun intersection and the western end of Flinders Street. It passes through an intersection with North Townsville Road (Woolcock Street) and across what used to be known as The Causeway. Predictably, the earliest incarnation of Charters Towers Road ran all the way to Charters Towers.

Initially, traffic bound for Ravenswood, Charters Towers and the northern goldfields went around, rather than through, the mangroves at the bottom of Flinders Street, running along what would become Ingham Road, past the Carriers' Arms Hotel (on the site that subsequently became the Midtown Hotel/Motel) to a point near the present showgrounds, where a left-hand turn took the road across a corduroy crossing towards Hermit Park.

From there, the road continued through the Rising Sun intersection through what would become Mundingburra, Aitkenvale, and Cranbrook to a junction near The Weir State School, where the Georgetown traffic parted company with that bound for Ravenswood and Charters Towers. The Georgetown road ran over Harvey's Range, while the Towers road crossed the Ross River towards its headwaters.
