Woodes Rogers
English navigator and colonial governor Woodes Rogers (c. 1679 – 1732) led the privateering expedition against the Spanish (1708-11), which took off Alexander Selkirk from Juan Fernandez Island and allowed William Dampier to complete his third circumnavigation.
On his return, Rogers wrote Voyage Round the World (1712), then moved on to become governor of the Bahamas (1718-21, 1729-32), where he suppressed piracy, founded a house of assembly and resisted Spanish attacks.
